Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has condemned recent attacks by the Houthi movement on Saudi Arabia, expressing Italy’s solidarity with the Kingdom. During a telephone conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Tajani emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and infrastructure in the region.
In his discussion with Prince Faisal, Tajani also conveyed gratitude to Saudi authorities for ensuring the safety of Italian citizens residing in the country. He underscored Italy’s support for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing crisis in Yemen, advocating for continued backing of United Nations-led efforts.
The talks between the two foreign ministers also addressed maritime security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. They stressed the significance of maintaining freedom of navigation and safeguarding commercial shipping routes, as well as bolstering security throughout the Gulf region.
Additionally, Tajani highlighted the importance of strengthening the European Union’s naval mission, Operation Aspides, which was launched in February 2024 to enhance the protection of shipping lanes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
As tensions persist, Saudi Arabia’s Cabinet has warned the Houthis about potential repercussions for their continued aggression against the Kingdom. The Cabinet also reiterated the necessity of securing navigation through strategic regions such as the Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait, while commending the international Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen for its actions against the Houthi group.
