Iran has declared its framework agreement with the United States null and void, alleging that Washington has breached the terms of the deal. This announcement was made as tensions in the region have intensified, prompting Iran to focus on self-defense measures. According to Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, the United States has failed to meet its obligations under the Islamabad declaration of intent, leading Tehran to suspend the agreement.
The framework, established in mid-June, was intended to pave the way for a permanent resolution to the longstanding hostilities between the two nations. The accord set a 60-day timeline for negotiations on a final settlement and included clauses concerning the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. However, these efforts have been undermined by a resurgence in conflict, which began after tensions flared anew in early July.
A ceasefire had been in place since the beginning of April, offering a temporary lull in hostilities. However, the fragile peace was shattered when escalations resumed in July, derailing the diplomatic progress that had been made. Iranian authorities have now indicated that they no longer consider themselves bound by the terms of the suspended framework agreement.
