The United Nations Security Council has issued a statement condemning the recent escalation of Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, a move welcomed by the Kingdom, which reaffirms its right to defend its territory under international law. The attacks have targeted civilians, airports, and critical infrastructure, posing significant threats to safety and stability in the region.

Specifically, the Security Council highlighted the attacks on King Khalid International Airport that took place on October 10 and 11, resulting in casualties. In addition, the council denounced strikes on other Saudi airports and facilities owned by Saudi Aramco. The statement expressed condolences to the victims’ families and urged the Houthis to cease military escalations and attacks on civilian targets.

The Security Council also emphasized the importance of implementing Resolution 2216, adopted in 2015, which calls for an end to the violence and a return to political dialogue. It stressed the need for enhanced international cooperation to prevent the supply of weapons, military equipment, and other forms of support to the Houthis. This includes working closely with Yemen’s internationally recognized government.

Furthermore, the council condemned threats to maritime navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait, highlighting the necessity of protecting commercial shipping, vessels, and crew members. These incidents have raised concerns over the safety of international maritime routes and the potential for broader regional instability.

The UN body reaffirmed its support for Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, while backing diplomatic efforts to achieve a comprehensive political settlement in Yemen. It expressed support for UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg’s ongoing efforts to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed gratitude for the Security Council’s solidarity, underscoring the importance of international consensus in addressing the threats posed by the Houthis. The Kingdom remains committed to protecting its citizens and infrastructure while advocating for a diplomatic solution to the ongoing crisis.
