UN Chief Condemns Houthi Attacks, Highlights Impact of Global Conflicts on Poor Nations

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced strong condemnation of recent Houthi attacks on civilian targets in Saudi Arabia, labelling the violence as unacceptable. Speaking at the UN headquarters in New York, Guterres highlighted the worsening conflict in Yemen, particularly around Taiz, where continued fighting is exacerbating civilian hardship and regional instability. He noted that hundreds of thousands have been displaced, with humanitarian needs rising, and urged restraint alongside a renewed political effort to resolve the conflict.

Guterres emphasized the broader implications of escalating global conflicts, describing them as creating an “El Niño of war.” He explained that regional conflicts can lead to global economic disruptions, impacting energy markets, shipping routes, and supply chains, which in turn elevate the costs of food, fuel, and borrowing. These surges place added pressure on households and developing economies, deepening existing inequalities and forcing poorer families to make difficult choices regarding essential needs. Such conditions also leave heavily indebted countries with fewer resources for crucial sectors like healthcare, education, and development.

The UN chief condemned assaults on civilian infrastructure in various conflict zones, including the Middle East, Ukraine, and Sudan. He stressed the importance of protecting homes, hospitals, schools, airports, and energy facilities under international humanitarian law. Regarding the occupied Palestinian territories, Guterres expressed concern over restrictions on humanitarian assistance in Gaza and attacks on Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank. He called for increased humanitarian aid and urged donors to meet a $450 million funding appeal to support people in Gaza and the West Bank over the next six months.

Guterres reiterated the necessity of a credible political process to end the Israeli occupation and achieve a two-state solution. His upcoming visit to Egypt aims to address the urgent need to prevent further escalation, protect civilians, and foster opportunities for diplomacy and peace.

The Secretary-General’s remarks come amid reports of intensified Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including strikes on airports, raising concerns over civilian safety and the potential for further regional instability. Guterres affirmed that the UN special envoy is actively engaging with relevant parties to maintain dialogue opportunities and promote a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
