At a high-level United Nations event, Saudi Arabia and Senegal have jointly emphasized the urgent need for increased international cooperation to combat the escalating global water crisis. The call comes amid growing concerns over water scarcity, rising demand, and limited access to safe drinking water worldwide.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Saudi Deputy Minister for International Multilateral Affairs Abdulrahman Al-Rassi underscored the significance of water security for international stability, economic growth, and community resilience. Al-Rassi argued that addressing the global water challenges requires more than just boosting water availability. He highlighted the necessity for improved governance, technological advancements, accessibility, and enhanced international collaboration. Drawing from Saudi Arabia’s experience, he pointed to efforts in managing water scarcity through desalination, technological investments, and the National Water Strategy 2030.
Similarly, Senegal stressed the need for water issues to be prioritized in global policymaking, especially as these challenges increasingly intersect with climate change, economic development, and social stability. The discussions also highlighted the importance of cooperation over shared water resources, with Senegal advocating for transboundary water management as a cooperative approach for nations facing common challenges.
The UN’s special envoy on water, Retno Marsudi, added that progress on the Sustainable Development Goal related to water and sanitation remains insufficient. She noted that millions globally still lack access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities, reinforcing the call for stronger collective action.
In a bid to further the global dialogue on water security, Saudi Arabia is set to host the 11th World Water Forum in March 2027. Meanwhile, Senegal and the UAE will co-host the 2026 UN Water Conference in Abu Dhabi, reflecting a continued commitment to addressing these pressing issues on an international stage.
