In the first half of 2025, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH) was responsible for conducting nearly half of all clinical trials registered in Saudi Arabia, underscoring its expanding influence in the realm of clinical research and healthcare advancement. The hospital boasts a comprehensive support structure for its clinical research endeavors, which includes a team of investigators, research nurses, pharmacists, coordinators, data specialists, and regulatory and ethics experts. These professionals collaboratively guide clinical studies from the initial scientific planning phase through to patient recruitment, trial execution, safety monitoring, and data management.
KFSH has made significant strides in building its clinical trial infrastructure since establishing a centralized Clinical Trials service in 2020. This service plays a crucial role in coordinating research efforts led by the hospital’s clinicians and investigators. It provides essential support for feasibility assessments, study activation, trial operations, patient recruitment, investigational medication management, data quality assurance, safety reporting, and adherence to regulatory and ethical standards. During the first half of 2025, KFSH reported 104 active clinical trials with an additional 80 new studies underway, covering a diverse array of medical fields such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune and musculoskeletal disorders, dermatology, gastroenterology, liver disease, and endocrine and metabolic conditions. This extensive range of studies not only offers patients with complex health issues access to pioneering treatment options but also contributes valuable clinical evidence pertinent to healthcare needs within Saudi Arabia.
A standout achievement during this period was the initiation of a Phase I clinical trial for relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia using locally manufactured genetically engineered CAR-T cells. This trial exemplifies the integration of local scientific expertise, cutting-edge biomanufacturing capabilities, and specialized clinical care, all within a unified research framework.
KFSH’s centralized approach to clinical trials also facilitates its involvement in comprehensive international studies. The hospital’s robust research governance and specialized clinical skills provide a solid platform for collaboration with global research partners, all while ensuring adherence to patient safety standards, ethical guidelines, data quality, and regulatory compliance. KFSH will showcase its clinical research methods and healthcare innovations at the upcoming C3 US NYC Davos of Healthcare Summit 2026 in New York City on September 14.
Recognized as a leading academic medical center both globally and within the Middle East, KFSH continues to earn accolades for its healthcare brand and maintains a strong presence in international hospital rankings. Based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the hospital is poised to make further advancements in clinical research and healthcare provision.
